This highway is the most direct route between the Mexican border at Laredo, Texas and St. Louis, Missouri. Over 7000 trucks per day travel through Atoka delivering goods for consumption throughout the world. Only 120 miles north of Dallas, Texas, 130 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and 140 miles south of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Atoka is in the "center" of everything! In fact, there are 80 million people within a 500 mile radius of Atoka. The City of Atoka has a current population of 2,988 residents, while the county has a population of approximately of 14,300. Well known for its hunting and fishing, Atoka has a vibrant and growing economy based on agriculture and manufacturing. Atoka, described in 1884 as the metropolis of the Choctaw Nation, was named for a respected Choctaw, Captain Atoka, who led a band of his people here during the "Trail of Tears" in the 1830's.
