The sales period used for establishing market value is generally the year before the assessment year.(2008).How high property taxes are county-wide depends on voter actions on the prior year's levy elections and the budgets local governments set for 2010. During 2009 voters passed levy lid lifts for 2 fire districts and approved a plan to combine Fire District 1 and Fire District 11 into the West Thurston Regional Fire Protection Service Authority. Typically about 39 percent of all property taxes are excess levies approved by Thurston County voters. Some taxpayers will find that they would paying less tax than last year and others would be paying more.Properties in Thurston County are revalued every year based on recent sales of similar properties in the neighborhood or general area. Assessments were based on the full market value of the property as of January 1 of the 2009 assessment year for property taxes payable in. Median values countywide for residential property types continued its downward trend, dropping 7.2 percent from January 2009 to January 2010, as compared to a decline of 6.2% for the previous year. Commercial properties decreased for the first time in several years. This was expected since the commercial market lags behind residential market.Property owners in the northern parts of the county, including properties with saltwater frontage, received their required six-year physical inspection. Their new values represent changes in property characteristics that were noted during the inspection. Some owners will see a larger or a smaller change in their assessments due to modifications of property characteristics and the effects of market activity. Please call the appraiser listed on your Value Change Notice if you have questions about your valuation. Our office is open from 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday. For information about how to appeal your property assessed value, please click.. You may also contact contact the Board of Equalization at 360-786-5135 or you may reach Ruth Elder, Clerk of the Board, at.elder@co.thurston.wa.us.. The deadline for filing appeals is Tuesday, November 9, 2010. Remember that the date of your assessment is January 1, 2010.
