The Sheriff provides security for the Houston County courthouse. Eleven officers are assigned to the courthouse to provide for the security and safety of courthouse and courtroom personnel. The daily dispatches are directed through our dedicated staff of Emergency E-911 Communications operators. They dispatch over 40,000 calls for service each year for law enforcement, fire and other emergency services.Aside from the day-to-day law enforcement responsibilities, the Sheriff's Department has a host of administrative responsibilities. Included in this category are records, public information, crime prevention, community relations, human resources, finance, purchasing and receiving, training, accreditation, internal affairs, etc.

Law enforcement includes all road patrol, investigative and emergency response facets of the agency. Currently the HCSD has 53 certified officers to protect the safety of the 100,000 Citizens of Houston County. The Corrections function is served by our 204 bed jail facility. Our day to day inmate count exceeds the rated jail capacity due to the inability of the State of Alabama to accept all inmates who have been sentenced to state prison.
