Off-Road Vehicle Safety Program:.This enforcement program runs from Labor Day to the snow season, and then from spring to Memorial Day. The Missaukee County Sheriff's Office receives a grant each year from the Department of Natural Resources that funds this enforcement program 100%. This program employs 1 full-time uniformed officer to patrol off-road vehicle trails and respond to calls for assistance relating to off-road vehicles. Missaukee County has approximately 70 miles of off-road vehicle trails. This enforcement program runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. The Missaukee County Sheriffs Office receives a grant each year from the Department of Natural Resources to help assist in the cost of 1 full-time and 1 part-time uniformed officer during the marine season. These officers are responsible for the patrol of approximately 3200 acres of waterways in Missaukee County including Lake Missaukee, Crooked Lake, Sapphire Lake, Goose and Long Lakes, Dyer Lake, Reedsburg Dam. These officers respond to calls for assistance and complaints from Central Dispatch. In May of each year, these Officers conduct a Marine Safety Course for those 12 and above. The 7 full-time Uniformed Law Enforcement Officers and 2 Sergeants respond to original calls for police services whether they are emergency or non-emergency. Those calls can be of a criminal nature, traffic related, citizen assists and/or any number of miscellaneous requests for assistance including medical responses. These Officers are responsible for taking complaints, investigating these complaints, and seeing the case through to court proceedings if necessary. Central Dispatch handles dispatch communications for numerous departments including the Missaukee County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, Missaukee County Emergency Medical Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and all area fire departments.Central Dispatch has contact with the Uniformed Law Enforcement Officers while they are in or outside the facility. Dispatchers can talk directly via voice communications with the officers either while they are in their patrol vehicle or on a portable radio that is carried with the officers while they are on duty. Snowmobile Safety Program:.This enforcement program runs from the snow season through the winter months. The Missaukee County Sheriffs Office receives a grant each year from the Department of Natural Resources to help assist in the cost of 1 full-time uniformed officer during the marine season. This officer patrols snowmobile trails, area lakes and roads on a snowmobile. They have Enhanced 9-1-1 which allows the Dispatcher to see the caller information on a computer screen. Enhanced 9-1-1 contains information such as the customers name, address, phone number, time of call, as well as information on what fire department would respond to this location.

This program is beneficial to the county and the community. This program allows bed space in the jail to be freed up for more violent offenders while at the same time provide the county and the community with inmate work crews.When given the option by the sentencing judge, individuals participate in the program on a volunteer basis only. Inmates must pay the Sheriff's Office a daily fee for the cost of supervision, payable each morning that they work on the crew. Failure to comply with any of the program's rules may result in an inmate serving the remainder of his/her sentence in jail. These non-violent offenders of less serious crimes are sentenced to the Weekend Work Program by the courts. The weekend work crews do various jobs for the county, township, municipal government and other non-profit community organizations.
